Abstract

The essay analyses the complex system of academic publishing, particularly focusing on the situation of northern Italy in the past half century, in order to highlight critical issues and possible lines of development. The essay will take into account the peculiarities of the sector, including the economic issues, the university policies, the university press (both institutional and independent), the open access system and the publishing houses, whether generally cultural or connected to specific branches of the professional and academic world.
