During the nineteenth century, the Middle Ages were chosen by the Romantic western imagination as an occasion for cultural reflection, identity, a functional moment to the development of the arts. Both Igino Benvenuto Supino as investigator in the documents of the history of the city, and Alfonso Rubbiani as a dreamer, creator of a Middle Ages more evocative than true, turned to these centuries.
