This article examines how 'The Pleasaunt Historie of Lazarillo de Tormes', the English version of the first picaresque novel, came into being. Due to its immense popularity, the original 'Lazarillo' inaugurated a series of early translations: the first were French (1560 and 1561), followed relatively
closely by the English (1576). The identification of the source of 'The Pleasaunt Historie' is made possible here, in the light of a thorough comparison between the layout, the language, and the fortune of these four different editions.
